Upside Down Pumpkin Pie-lettes

Experimentation at its best! Ok, so last year, I had a student who didn't want to take his pumpkin from our pumpkin patch field trip home. Long story short, I made a pie from it and brought it to class. So as not to break the new rules about food at school, I made the pie into a lesson on trade-off costs for natural resources. (a 6th grade science standard!)
This year, another abandoned pumpkin. I don't want to have to slice pie, find plates and forks, and deal with the clean-up so I have an idea. Bake mini pies in a cupcake pan! Genius, right? No. I even thought I was being all smart by flattening out a cupcake liner to see what size rounds to cut. Well, friends, unless you can make your pie crust crimp like those liners, it ain't gonna work.
Oh well, I'll just bake the custard in the cupcake liners - they don't need crust. But hey! I made crust; now what will I do with it? Light bulb moment: cut rounds of crust and lay it ON TOP OF THE CUSTARD! Okay, so they're not very pretty, but the sure taste good!
No, I still don't have a camera, just trust me that they're not pretty ;)
