AstroCamp

I just got home from spending the week with 59 6th graders at AstroCamp.  Overall, it was a great week.  Many kids were seeing snow for the first time, and most certainly were climbing 40 feet up in trees for the first time as well.
The camp is a mix of ropes courses & science classes.  I was the lead teacher this year, and naturally signed us up for every ropes course activity available.  Rock climbing on mars, jumping from the top of a 25 foot pole, microgravity in the pool, and more high up stuff.  It was great to see the kids pull together to encourage the more nervous or frightened members of their groups.
The classroom times are not your typical lesson.  When they talk about the properties of gases & temperature, they take out some liquid nitrogen & freeze stuff. When discussing the properties of our sun & solar power, the students baked cookies in a solar powered oven.  Talk about experiential learning!
It was awesome & exhausting at the same time.
